Mexicans Head to the Polling Stations in Historic First Judiciary Elections
On June 1, 2025, after ten hours of voting, polling stations nationwide officially closed, allowing those still in line to cast their ballots before the end of the day. This historic election marks the first time Mexicans directly elect judges, including Supreme Court justices, circuit magistrates, and district judges.
The National Electoral Institute (INE) promptly began the second phase of the electoral process: the counting and tabulation of votes at district council facilities, a departure from traditional precinct-level counting.
Unlike previous elections, vote counting will not occur at polling stations under citizen supervision. Instead, ballots are transported securely to INE district offices, where the tallying is conducted with live broadcasts accessible to the public, ensuring transparency and accountability.
INE officials reported that over 80% of voting incidents were resolved satisfactorily during the day, despite challenges such as suspended polling stations due to weather or security concerns.

A Milestone in Judicial Reform and Citizen Participation
This election is the culmination of a sweeping judicial reform led by the Morena party and the progressive government, aiming to dismantle entrenched corruption by empowering citizens to select their judges directly. With more than 3,400 candidates vying for 881 federal and local judicial positions, the process reflects a transformative step toward democratizing Mexico’s judiciary and strengthening the rule of law.
As the vote counting progresses, all eyes remain on the results, expected to be fully announced by June 15, signaling a new chapter in Mexico’s democratic and judicial history.
